Why? Because I am in it and we have a show on march 4th and 5th in NYC and some of the troupe are going to a festival in Paris after that. Here is some information about us: Théâtre OUF!
Théâtre OUF! is an ensemble of international, multicultural, French-speaking artists based in Brooklyn, NY. Its mission is to present original, multilingual, fun and highly entertaining original theater performances that address complex social issues. Théâtre OUF! invites audiences to think for themselves about these issues instead of letting the media tell them how to think. Théâtre OUF! performs using a very cartoon-esque comedic style, incorporating original music, live sound effects, video, and broad expressive physical comedy, making the productions accessible to any audience. The shows are multilingual, primarily using French and English, but due to the exaggerated physical action, audiences who don’t speak either language can understand the principle messages.
Théâtre OUF! has created a new production every year, beginning with Scapin in June of 2003 when Hélène Demé Elzévir adapted, with the cast, a Molière play, Les Fourberies de Scapin, trying to give a good English replication of Molière’s choices in the juxtapositions of funny sounding words.
The representatives of the Lycée Français de New York’s International Theatre Conference “Festival Première Scène” then commissioned Hélène Demé Elzévir to create a new, original show. She gathered French and American actors and together they created Bon Appétit!? a comedy about the French-American relationships based on their relationships to food. Mostly this was a show in response to how the mass media handled the crisis between our two countries. Originally Bon Appétit!? was only supposed to have played two times in March 2004. However, every time it was performed, an audience member representing another venue or arts organization invited the group to play again. Within eight months, Théâtre OUF! performed Bon Appétit!? 13 times to over 1500 people to overwhelming audience enthusiasm. The venues include the off-Broadway Dicapo Opera Theatre, One Arm Red, the D.U.M.B.O. Arts Festival and finally the SUNY Purchase Performing Center.
Théâtre OUF! has been featured on the front page of the The Brooklyn Papers’ entertainment section, representing the D.U.M.B.O. Arts Festival and also received mention in various Brooklyn local papers. The company is now invited to perform at the Festival d’Hiver (H.E.C.) in France. Théâtre OUF! will be the first company coming from abroad to perform on March 10th, 2005, at the Festival d’Hiver, on the H.E.C. Paris campus in Jouy-en-Josas (Yvelines). This will also be the French (and European) Premiere of Bon Appétit!?.
